February 2005
Aaron Novik just went into the studio with Andy Cabic of Vetiver fame to record on song Andy wrote for a cd compilation. The song was based on an essay about an imaginary friend named Quiri Quirano, and has a beautiful Paul McCartney-esque quality. Violinist/Violist Dina Maccabee recorded on the track as well.
March 2005
Aaron Novik is going to be recording three (count'em) times this month. First up is a great big band session lead by the great pianist/composer Graham Connah. If you read Evan's interview in the press section, you'll get a feeling for how much the two of us liked this music when it was performed last year.click here to read the interview. He will also be recording with the raucous and fun Transmission, with NYC saxist Colin Stetson coming back into town for the session. Finally his own group Kipple will go into the studio to record their first record.
April 2005
Aaron will be going into the studio again. This time to record for the great local group, Gojogo, started by violinst Sarah Jo Zaharako. He will also be spending a bunch of time mixing the Kipple sessions laid down recently, as well as finishing up the composition commission for Saint Joseph Ballet.
September 2005
Aaron just gor back from Manhattan, where he played two shows at the new club The Stone. He is currently mixing his second cd and writing lots of new music.
December 2005
Aaron's second cd, Kipple "Flashes of Irrational Happiness" was just mastered this month and is slated for release in early March of 2006. Work will begin promptly on the next cd which will be a new works cd, including the Dancing into One piece from the St. Joseph Ballet, the Samuel Suite which premiered at the Gubbish cd release party, and a new work for the group Crafty Apples that will be used in conjunction with experimental animation. If that wasn't enough Aaron has a new working band tentatively titled "Floating World" that will be giging extensivly in 2006.
July 2006
Well, the Kipple cd, after a series of necessary delays, is about to be pressed. A release date has not been set, but believe me, I'll be the first to know. In other exciting news, my third cd is almost done being recorded. This is a compilation of two suites I wrote last year: The Samuel Suite, written for 13 plus musicians including a string quartet, horns, and rock rhythm section, and second, "Dancing into one", a piece I was comissioned to write for my klezmer band The Yiddiots, which is a departure from our usual jewish repertoire. This cd will focus on melody and beauty to Kipple's rhythm, sound and harmony.
Also, my new metal band, 12tonedeathrow, is going into the studio to record it's first ep/lp. This project is still being worked out, so it's best to let it be a surprise, but I will say I'm playing an amplified clarinet on it. Crazy.
Finally, I've been writing music for an experimental animation project, that is being perfomed by my group Crafty Apples. The music is in a formative stage also, but I'm real happy with where this project is going as well. That's enough for now.
December 2006
The Kipple cd is finally here. I'm having a cd release party on December 15th at the Hemlock tavern so please come by. My new metal band tentatively titled Simulacra is opening.
Speaking of metal bands, we just finished recording our first record as well. It's going to be great so stay tuned.
Also slated for release next year is the beautiful and lush Samuel Suite record, which is a large ensemble with lots of horns and strings. This record also features the much loved Yiddiots playing a suite I wrote for the St. Joseph ballet called Dancing into One.
November 2007
Yes it's been a while, but here is what is going on. I've been applying for grants for my new band Floating World which is working on a new project involving local "outsider" poets. I've set the poetry of Michael Bernard Loggins, a peot who is developmentally disabled, Swan, a peot who is homeless, and Bart Alberti, an autistic savant.
